Burnham Beeches 13 September 2015

Sunday, time for a short walk after the long walk yesterday so back to Burnham Beeches. I quite like going back to places. First time round you take in the bigger picture. After that you get to look at the smaller details and relax into the feel of the place. It was quite a cool, overcast day but pleasant for walking.

I took a back route and came across another scheduled Ancient Monument - the Hartley Court Moat and Enclosure, a medieval moated farmstead apparently used between 1250 and 1350. All those books we've read about ancient England? This could have been the setting for some them. This is off the more popular routes and there were very few people around, so quite easy to imagine what it could have been like back then.

Part of the moat.

The centre enclosure.

Surrounded by trees, perhaps ancient relatives?

After prowling around there, imagining how damn cold it must have been during the winter and picturing the cup of tea at the tea room I took the most direct route back. Look at these enormous fungi! They are hard so I would imagine they've been there for a while.

Acorns - the squirrels are busy

And some more fungi ... Frilly ones this time.

Time for lunch. This must be one of the smallest omelettes on record, but it was tasty enough and the tea was good.
